Benjamin "Benji" Campbell is a main character in Love, Victor. He is portrayed by George Sear.

Biography

Benji Campbell was born on the 16th of November 2002.[1] He lives in Shady Creek, Georgia and attends Creekwood High School. He works after school as the assistant manager and a barista at Brasstown Coffee Company. Also, he is a band member and the lead singer of The Sticky Beaks.

He is openly gay.[2] Benji suffers from anxiety[3] and before he came out, he didn’t want to be gay, he coped with this by drinking liquor. [4] One day Benji's dad found some pictures of naked men in Benji's laptop files, but he told his father that the pictures were Lucy's, and he denied being gay, when his father leaves, Benji put alcohol to his orange juice.[5] One night when he was drunk, he went out to a Wendy's in his father's car which resulted in him crashing into the restaurant, no one was hurt. Waking up in a hospital with his parents standing over him made him realize that he could have died without really being who he was, and he decided to tell his parents that he was gay. When he got home from the hospital, he overheard his parents having a discussion about his school problems and his drinking problem, and his father saying that he “wasn't the son he pictured”.[5] This accident caused his license suspended.[4]

He quickly became friends with new student, Victor Salazar, when he hired Victor to work as a barista at the coffee shop. It is apparent that he began to grow feelings towards Victor, singing a song at the Battle of the Bands contest that was undoubtedly directed to Victor and gifting Victor a portrait of him he drew for his birthday. He briefly ended his friendship with Victor, when Victor unexpectedly kissed him. To distance himself from Victor, Benji switched coffee shops.

Almost a year prior to the series premiere, he began a relationship with his band mate, Derek. Benji's relationship with Derek became strained when Derek was unappreciative of him and blew off their anniversary. Benji tried to make things work with Derek. However, he realized during the spring fling dance exactly how much he cared for Victor and ended his relationship with Derek. He and Victor shared a passionate kiss on a bench outside of the dance venue.

Personality

Friendly, thoughtful, romantic, considerate, comfortable being gay. Throughout the first season, Benji has been a helpful, thoughtful friend to Victor, showing him the ropes of Brasstown Coffee Company. He can be sometimes charming to people with whom he has a connection. Benji also has been considerate, as when Victor kissed him in the hotel they were staying at, the next day he transferred to a different Brasstown location so as to not cause problems with Victor about the kiss, and to distance himself from Victor. Benji can also be a forgiving person, when Victor stuck a letter in his locker and told him to meet him in the bathroom, he forgave Victor. However, his relationship with Derek wasn't shown much as Derek wasn't paying enough attention towards him or appreciated him so they broke up. Benji is also very open about himself. He told Victor he almost died and by not telling his parents/family his secret, he realized they would never know the true him, so he came out to them. His fondness for Victor made their friendship closer, and in the series one finale they confess their love for one another.
